After qualifying two boats at the USRowing Southeast Regional Championships, Asheville Youth Rowing Association attended USRowing Youth National Championships by invitation. During the four day race, two boats, the Women’s Varsity Four and the Men’s Varsity Four, competed against the most competitive boats in the United States.
The race began with Time Trials on Thursday, June 6, where the Women’s Four had the third fastest time qualifying them to go directly to semi-finals on Saturday. The Men’s Four had the ninth fastest time sending them to repechages on Friday. At their rep on Friday, the Men had the fastest time sending them to semi-finals on Saturday.
On Saturday, in the grueling heat of Sarasota, FL, the Women’s Four had the second fastest time in their semi qualifying them for the A Final on Sunday which consists of the six fastest boats in the United States. The Men’s Four had the fifth fastest time in their semi qualifying them for the B Final on Sunday which consists of the next six fastest boats in the United States.
Sunday morning, June 9, the Women’s Four came in fourth, just missing a medal but making them the fourth fastest boat in the United States. They were the only boat from the Southeast to make it to the A Final. The other five boats were from the West Coast, Connecticut, and New York.
Later that morning, the Men’s Four came in second in the B Final making them the 8th fastest boat in the United States. They were the only boat from the Southeast to make it to the A or B Final. The other five boats in the B Final were from the West Coast and Connecticut.
The Women’s Four consisted of the following:
Riley Minor, coxswain, sophomore at TCRoberson
Phoebe Haller, stroke seat, senior at Reynolds and going to the US Naval Academy in the fall where she will row
Lori Belanger, three seat, homeshcooled junior
Adelaide Lammers, two seat, senior at Carolina Day School and going to Notre Dame in the fall where she will row
Ranait Fitzgerald, bow, senior at TCRoberson and going to UNC-Chapel Hill in the fall where she will row
The Men’s Four consisted of the following:
Paiton Jacko, coxswain, sophomore at Hendersonville High
Munroe Robinson, stroke seat, sophomore at Carolina Day School
Sam Thornburg, three seat, junior at Asheville High
Isaac Evans, two seat, junior at Owen High
Max O’Halloran, bow, senior at Asheville High
